Maple Grove Middle School hosts career panel for eighth grade students

Maple Grove Middle School’s (MGMS) eighth grade students got a chance to learn about different career opportunities May 15 and 16 during Tell Me About It sessions, when nearly 20 speakers visited the school to share about their careers.

The wide-ranging career list included an army helicopter pilot, attorney, event operations manager, chief financial officer, registered dietician, holistic healthcare worker and more. The volunteers shared information about their path into their career, details of their day-to-day working lives and answered student questions.

MGMS Principal Patrick Smith said a parent, Kendra Grand, came up with the idea for Tell Me About It panels, where different community members and parents share information about their careers with students. Each grade level takes part in Tell Me About It panels every year, which are organized by Grand. These have typically been conducted via video and Google Meet in the past, so Smith said the in-person experience is new. Students were given a list in advance and could select which speakers they wanted to attend.

“As an AVID school, we promote college, career and beyond, so we are doing a lot to get kids in that mindset,” Smith said. “This is the right time to plant the seed, to open their eyes to what’s out there and guide them on their path into high school and beyond.”
